At the crossroads of luxury and history, the Imperial Hotel Tokyo stands as a beacon of elegance, offering a world-class experience for its guests. The hotel has hosted VIPs, dignitaries, and royalty from around the globe, maintaining its status as one of the most prestigious hotels in Japan. With over a century of heritage, two Michelin-starred restaurants, and an impeccable dedication to service, the Imperial Hotel is truly a crown jewel in Tokyo’s hospitality landscape.
In 2026, the Imperial Hotel will expand its legacy with the opening of a new property in Kyoto, further enhancing its commitment to offering the finest in Japanese luxury and hospitality.
A Storied Architectural History
The Imperial Hotel Tokyo opened its doors in 1890, during a time when Japan was actively modernizing and opening its doors to the world. Built to accommodate foreign dignitaries, it quickly became a symbol of the country’s progress. However, it was the 1923 design by Frank Lloyd Wright that truly placed the hotel in the international spotlight. Wright’s innovative use of Mayan Revival architecture, combined with his renowned earthquake-resistant techniques, made the Imperial Hotel a marvel of its time. The fact that the hotel survived the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake on the very day it opened is part of its legendary status.
Although Wright’s building no longer stands, the hotel that replaced it in 1982 maintains the balance of tradition and modernity. The Frank Lloyd Wright Suite offers a nod to the iconic architect’s vision, with its distinctive art deco design, warm hues, and elegant furnishings. For architecture lovers, this suite is a must-stay, allowing guests to step back in time while enjoying the ultimate luxury. There are many other elements throughout the property honoring Franklin Lloyd Wright.
Our stay at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo
We discovered this magnificent hotel on our own. Keep in mind we did a lot of research before we chose our accommodations. Once we choose a few, we verify we can use our Chase points to get our room for free. It turned out our first choice, the Imperial Hotel, was available. As much as we absorbed the reviews and expected a wonderful experience, we were not prepared for what was about to happen. They shined on every level; it was pure perfection. We were reluctant to leave, but we had lots more of Japan to explore.
Location
The Imperial Hotel is located in the Chiyoda district of Tokyo, Japan, which makes it a prime base for both leisure and business travelers. It is situated near the Imperial Palace and offers easy access to various attractions in the city. The hotel is just a short walk from the Imperial Palace, offering guests the chance to explore the serene palace gardens. The nearby Ginza district, renowned for its luxury shopping and fine dining, is also within walking distance. Guests can enjoy the bustling shops, restaurants, and cafes that make Ginza one of Tokyo’s top destinations.

A Gleaming Masterpiece in the Imperial Hotel Lobby
As you enter the hotel, your eyes immediately catch the Minamis Tada grand artwork Reimei (dawn), also known as the Wall of Light. It is made of approximately 7,600 glass blocks that create a serene and inviting atmosphere. This artwork elegantly plays with light and shadow, offering a calming visual experience that reflects the beauty of nature. Tada’s installation beautifully complements the hotel’s contemporary design while celebrating Japanese aesthetics.
Dining and Lounges at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo
Michelin-Starred Dining
The Imperial Hotel Tokyo boasts two Michelin-starred restaurants that offer unforgettable culinary experiences:
1. Les Saisons is a Michelin–star French restaurant under the helm of Chef Thierry Voisin. The restaurant combines classic French culinary techniques with the finest seasonal Japanese ingredients, creating dishes that are as exquisite as they are refined. The plush interiors and opulent atmosphere make it one of the most exclusive dining experiences in Tokyo. We ate a lovely breakfast here, and it was delicious.
2. Torakuro is a Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant that combines the art of Japanese cuisine with the freshest ingredients, including premium Wagyu beef and seafood. Guests are treated to a live cooking experience as chefs prepare each dish in front of them with precision and flair, making it as much about the spectacle as the flavors.
Beyond these Michelin stars, the Imperial Hotel Tokyo offers a wide range of dining and lounge options:
- Imperial Viking Sa: Tokyo’s first buffet-style restaurant, offering an array of wonderful dishes. The buffet is incredible and very popular!
- Parkside Diner: This diner serves classic American comfort food like burgers, pancakes, and milkshakes, as well as Japanese dishes.
- San Applause: A modern Japanese restaurant offering innovative takes on traditional dishes.
- Rendez-Vous Lounge and Bar: A perfect place for afternoon tea or cocktails with the gorgeous Wall of Light.
- The Rendez Vous AWA: Their new Champange-focused lounge is at the hotel’s entrance. It is a hub for Get-Togethers.
- The Imperial Lounge Aqua Enjoy Quality Time in a Relaxing British-style atmosphere. Enjoy afternoon tea while looking over Hibaya Park,
- Tokyo Nadaman: Here, you can enjoy genuine kaiseki cuisine made with the choicest seasonal ingredients. The menu features flavors from all seasons and carefully selected ingredients.
- Nakata Fanatical sushi gourmets claim Nakata’s creations are among the finest of the traditional Tokyo-style sushi. L
- Toraya The Toraya tea room serves Japanese snacks, sweets, and light meals. In this restrained space, visitors can enjoy Japanese snacks made with a focus on ingredients and the seasons.
- Imperial Bar is a stunning whisky bar that we will describe in more detail below. It does have a dress code.
The Imperial Bar: Classic and Timeless
The Imperial Bar is a Tokyo institution. With its rich, dark wood interiors, plush seating, and classic cocktails, it evokes a sense of timeless elegance. The bar is famous for its expertly crafted drinks, including a broad selection of Japanese whiskies. Whether you’re looking for a post-dinner nightcap or a quiet evening with friends, the Imperial Bar offers an intimate setting to unwind.
We spent a delightful evening at the Imperial Bar, where the bar staff was exceptionally knowledgeable about their whiskey collection. Ryan, an aspiring whiskey aficionado, was in seventh heaven during our time there. Newsweek had just asked him to contribute to an article they were writing about whiskey. Let’s say he was more than happy to do the research!
Three categories of guest rooms
Regular Floors ( Main Building) 7th-12th floors have been designed with both dignity and functional elegance in mind. Whether you are staying with family or here on business, these rooms provide comfort and elegance.
Tower Building floors 20th and 29th-31st are perfect for guests who wish to enjoy the night view and the promise of a comfortable and luxurious experience.
The Imperial Floors (main building 14th-16th floors) house many of our most refined guest rooms and sumptuous suites. These spacious, world-class facilities feature our lavish SleepWorks beds, the ultimate sleeping system. We stayed here and can speak from personal experience.
The Imperial Floors offer elevated service and luxury. These top-tier floors cater to guests seeking the highest level of privacy, service, and attention to detail. Pajamas are put out each evening with your turn-down service, and a glass of wine or beer is delivered to the room each evening by the floor Geisha.
What makes the Imperial Floors genuinely exceptional is the Geisha service provided on each floor. Traditionally trained Geishas are available to attend to every guest request, offering a uniquely Japanese touch to the hospitality experience. Special Mention Room
Frank Llyod Wright Suite is the only suite in the world to bear the name of Frank Lloyd Wright under a name-use agreement with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation of the United States. We had the privilege of visiting the suite on our tour. The Frank Lloyd Wright® Suite incorporates the design of the former Wright Building of the Imperial Hotel; it has Wright’s original carpets, furniture, and lighting, as well as the design of his private residence in the United States, and reconstructs them in a hotel room. For passionate Frank Lloyd Wright fans, this would be the ultimate experience.

What We Loved About the Imperial Hotel Tokyo
What didn’t we love? Our stay at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo was nothing short of extraordinary. In fact, we can confidently say that it may be the most incredible hotel we’ve ever stayed in—and considering we’ve stayed in well over a thousand hotels, that’s no small statement. From the moment we arrived, the staff’s attention to detail and commitment to exceptional service were evident.
We loved how elegant the hotel felt, without ever being stuffy or formal. It strikes the perfect balance between luxury and comfort. Every detail, from the meticulously maintained rooms to the seamless service, was perfect. One of the highlights for us was the level of attentiveness from the staff. We rarely even had to press the elevator button—the staff was always present and ready to assist with a smile and a bow.
At the hotel, we had a traditional Japanese tea service that impressed us with its deep tradition and authenticity. We were glad to have done this early on in our visit to Japan.
The Imperial Hotel Tokyo embodies everything we love about luxury hospitality: elegance, impeccable service, and warm hospitality. Our stay exceeded our expectations in every way. During our Japan travels, we stayed at five more amazing hotels that we were in awe of. No one, though, came close to our experience at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo.
What are the cons
It can be pricey, especially during the busy season. However, this kind of service, elegance, and attention to detail mandates lots of staff and services, which are costly. Is it worth it? Absolutely. If you can get the hotel as we did using points or get lower prices in the off-season, don’t miss out. It doesn’t really get any better than this.

We booked the hotel online using our Chase Sapphire Reserve Points and paid nothing except for a small city tax for our 4-night stay on one of the Imperial Floors. That booking with points included daily breakfast. We let the hotel know we were visiting the weeks before our arrival. We requested a tour of the hotel, which they kindly provided us. The tour was extensive and very informative. There is so much history and unique areas of the hotel we would have missed had we not had a personalized tour. They did not ask, nor did we commit to any social media or blog content.
Reflection on Our Stay
Our stay at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo was truly exceptional. It stands out as one of the finest hotels we’ve ever stayed in—which says a lot, considering we’ve experienced thousands. From the moment we arrived, the hotel exuded a perfect balance of elegance and comfort. The staff’s attention to detail was incredible, and small gestures, like pressing the elevator button for us, made us feel pampered every step of the way.
What sets the Imperial Hotel Tokyo apart is its ability to be luxurious without being pretentious. The warmth and genuine hospitality made us feel at home despite the grandeur. The beautifully appointed rooms reflected a harmonious blend of modern amenities and traditional Japanese touches, ensuring our comfort throughout our stay.
The dining options were another highlight, from the Michelin-starred restaurants to casual yet refined spots like the Parkside Diner. The hotel’s central location in the Chiyoda district allowed us to explore Tokyo’s best attractions with ease, while its serene atmosphere provided a perfect retreat from the city’s energy.
The Imperial Hotel Tokyo surpassed our expectations in every way, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone seeking a truly unforgettable experience in Tokyo or Japan as a whole.

Visitors can participate in traditional Shinto practices, such as writing wishes on “ema” (wooden plaques) or witnessing a conventional wedding ceremony, making it a profoundly cultural experience.
5. Shibuya Crossing
Often referred to as the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world, Shibuya Crossing is a Tokyo icon that symbolizes the fast-paced energy of the city. Surrounding the crossing are neon billboards, giant TV screens, and famous landmarks like the Hachiko Statue, making it an excellent spot for people-watching and soaking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Tokyo.
6. Stroll through Ueno Park
A cultural and recreational hub in Tokyo, Ueno Park is home to several major museums, a zoo, and some of the city’s most beautiful cherry blossom trees. During the spring sakura*season, the park becomes a lively gathering spot for locals and tourists alike, who come to enjoy hanami (cherry blossom viewing) picnics. Inside, there are shops and cafes, as well as exhibits about the history of the tower, making it both a cultural and scenic experience.

Although the famed Tsukiji Fish Market has moved to a new location, the Tsukiji Outer Market remains a vibrant spot to enjoy some of the freshest seafood in Tokyo. The market is a maze of stalls offering a wide variety of sushi, sashimi, grilled seafood, and street food, providing an authentic taste of Japan’s culinary heritage. Whether you’re a seasoned sushi lover or a first-timer, Tsukiji is the perfect place to sample local delicacies such as uni (sea urchin), otoro (fatty tuna), and freshly shucked oysters.
